RCSO: Man shot in the back four times
CONYERS - A 20-year-old Conyers man was shot four times in the back while walking along Iris Drive near the DeKalb County line Monday afternoon, according to the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office.
Sgt. Jodi Shupe, spokeswoman with the RCSO, said investigators responded around 2:40 p.m. to the area near the leasing office for Haynes Park at Stonecrest apartment complex, located at 8533 Mall Parkway. Officers with the DeKalb County Police Department were already on the scene when RCSO investigators arrived and the victim had been transported by ambulance to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
Investigators met with the victim while he was in the hospital, Shupe said. The man told them he was walking west along Iris Drive to look for work at the Mall at Stonecrest when three black men in a silver Buick LeSabre pulled up beside him.
"The suspects demanded that he give them his wallet, they took his money and gave him his wallet back," Shupe said. "That's when he took off running and he was shot four times."
The victim apparently walked toward the apartment construction area and workers there called the police.
The victim told investigators that the driver of the LeSabre never exited the vehicle, but the rear passenger and the front-seat passenger got out of the car.
"All the victim could tell us about the suspects was that they were three black males, but did not give any other description," Shupe said.
She said the victim said he did not know the men and had never seen them before.
Shupe said he was also unable to provide a description of the gun used in the shooting.
Questions also exist about whether the shooting occurred in Rockdale or DeKalb. Shupe said the victim was near the large rock welcoming motorists to Rockdale County when traveling eastbound on Interstate 20.
"It's questionable about where the shooting actually took place," she said.
Investigators found a black jacket with several bullet holes in the back located about 100 yards inside the county line on the south side of Iris Drive.
Rockdale County authorities are handling the investigation, which remains open. Anyone with information about suspicious activity in the area is asked to call RCSO at 770-918-6700.

3 Salem High Students Die In Wreck
COVINGTON - Three Salem High School students were killed Friday in a single-vehicle wreck on Ga. Highway 20 in Henry County, according to Henry County officials.
The victims were all residents of Conyers and were students at Salem High School. They were identified as Naijah Grover, 17, who was driving the car; Torrence Blount, 20; and Derron Michael Anderson, 18.
Capt. Jason Bolton, spokesman with the Henry County Police Department, said the accident is believed to have occurred either late Friday night or early Saturday morning, but the bodies were not discovered until about noon Saturday.
Bolton said the wreck occurred in the vicinity of Wilder Way near the entrance to Wilder Plantation subdivision, about 1.5 miles from Newton County and approximately 2 miles from the Rockdale County line.
He said that an off-duty patrol officer and another motorist were driving in the area Saturday and noticed skid marks across the road, leading down an embankment.
"They found a Dodge Neon that had apparently lost control and went off the road and down about a 30-foot embankment," Bolton said. "Upon further investigation, they found the bodies of three black males inside the vehicle."
Bolton said it does not appear that alcohol was a factor in the wreck and investigators do not believe any other vehicles were involved. He said that the specific location of the wreck on Ga. 20 is on a curve and is known to be heavily populated with deer and other wildlife.
"It would have been difficult to see the car from the road except for the skid marks," Bolton said.
Cindy Ball, spokeswoman for Rockdale County Public Schools, said on Saturday that Salem High School will have crisis counselors available at Salem High beginning Monday.

Sheriff hopefuls debate
CONYERS - Experience, or the perception of it, was a major point of contention between Rockdale County Democratic sheriff candidates Donald Ferguson and Randy Akies during a debate Saturday.
The debate, held at the Johnson Park center, offered a chance for both candidates to show voters what they had to offer leading up to the July 15 primary election. The event was hosted by the Rockdale County Democratic Party, attracting a healthy turnout of residents, elected officials and those running for other elected offices.
